Dr. Tonmoy Sharma: The Leadership of a Mental Health Champion
Dr. Tonmoy Sharma, a leading psychiatric researcher on schizophrenia, founded Sovereign Health Group Addiction, Dual Diagnosis & Mental Health in 2009, and it has already outperformed 50 other treatment institutions nationwide in some key health care metrics in 2016. His dedication to furthering the treatment of substance misuse and mental disorders has been acknowledged by prominent organizations and institutions.
On the 20th of May, 1999, a professor from University College London remarked that Dr. Sharma is widely known globally and in high demand as a conference speaker because of his excellent communication abilities. In an email to Subject Fisher Waterhouse on 2nd of July, 2007, a professor from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Poland lauded Dr. Sharma as one of the most excellent scientists in his area and he is indeed the most published and quoted author in the field of schizophrenia. The GMC Panel also recognized in 2007 that Dr. Sharma’s significant number of publications made important contributions to the advancement of medical science.
According to a statement made by the National Alliance on Mental Illness Orange County (NAMI) in 2016, Dr. Tonmoy Sharma and the Sovereign Health Group have set the bar for mental health care across the country. John Leyerle, President of the NAMI Orange County, also stated in his letter to the Community Mental Health Leadership that NAMI takes pride in their affiliation with Dr. Sharma as his work is deeply rooted in passion for the vulnerable and needy communities. NAMI also supports the decision of University of Southern California in entrusting its Graduate Students to train under Sovereign. In 2017, Dr. Sharma was elected as a Board Member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness in Orange County.

Dr. Tonmoy Sharma was invited to join a panel of Orange County’s top experts and thought leaders in 2017 and 2018 to share his experience and opinions on crucial healthcare issues. The Healthcare Roundtable discusses regulatory changes and reform, medical and technological advancements, new value-based care initiatives, and other innovative approaches utilized by top healthcare and mental health companies to improve patient care.
The Healthcare Roundtable’s panel of thought leaders and specialists includes representatives from local hospitals, community health centers, behavioral health groups, law firms, academic institutions, and insurance companies. Other Organizations represented were Sovereign Health, MemorialCare, Kaiser Permanente, UCI Health, Hoag Orthopedic Institute, Cigna, Providence St. Joseph Health, Stanbridge University, Burham Benefits Insurance Services, Monarch HealthCare, KPC Health, Radiant Health Centers, and Lindora.
In the 32nd annual International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals Foundation (IAEDP) Symposium 2018, Dr. Tonmoy Sharma was invited to speak alongside other behavioral health professionals and eating disorder specialists, including keynote speaker
Norman Doidge, M.D., from the University of Toronto’s Department of Psychiatry and Research Faculty at the Colombia University’s Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (CAPTR). The 32nd IAEDP was one of the largest conferences with more than 800 individuals registered for the event.
Dr. Sharma also became a guest on FOX 31 Denver Colorado’s Best in November 2017, where he explained how tracking patients’ results can be used to improve addiction and mental health treatment in an interview. Dr. Sharma described how Sovereign Health uses validated measures to monitor patients’ treatment effectiveness and provides data on a regular basis to Harvard Medical School associate McLean Hospital, which gathers and analyzes data using the 24-item Behavior and Symptom Identification Scale.
Dr. Tonmoy Sharma was also the key speaker at the 13th Annual Statewide Conference of the New York Society of Addiction Medicine’s (NYSAM) in 2017. He was joined by other prominent members of the addiction treatment industry, including Paul Wax, M.D., Executive Director of the American College of Medical Toxicology and Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine (Medical Toxicology) at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Arlene Gonzalez-Sanchez, M.S., L.M.S.W., Commissioner of the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASES), and Herbert D. Kleber, M.D., professor of psychiatry and founder of The Drug Dependence Unit at Yale University.
Aside from Dr. Sharma’s individual invitations, Sovereign Health also became the thought leadership partner of the 2017 Institute for the Advancement of Behavioral Healthcare’s Chicago Summit for Clinical Excellence. CEO Dr. Tonmoy Sharma represented the organization at the summit, themed, “Freud Meets Buddha: Mindfulness, Trauma, and Process Addiction.” Other notable speakers of the event were Gabor Maté, M.D., Harriet Lerner, Ph.D., Reef Karim, D.O., and Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S.
Despite not practicing medicine at Sovereign, Dr. Sharma has been trained as a psychiatrist and has a penchant for practical education. Sovereign Health has been able to create partnerships with the University of Southern California, Argosy University, and the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers to provide real clinical experience to students and doctoral fellows under the supervision of qualified psychologists. Dr. Sharma and his team have welcomed the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals into Sovereign in order to offer levels of Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor (CADC) accreditation.
