Dr. SharmaThe Origin of Dr. Tonmoy Sharma: A Pioneer in Schizophrenia Research and Treatment

Dr. Tonmoy Sharma, CEO of Sovereign Health, is a well-known international research psychiatrist, whose vast investigation explored the brain, cognition, and human behavior in mental illnesses, particularly schizophrenia. The present methods of clinical treatment are still influenced by Dr. Sharma’s publications and substantial discoveries in medical knowledge.

Dr. Sharma graduated from Dibrugarh University in Assam, India, with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree (M.B.B.S) in 1987. He was awarded a number of academic accolades throughout his undergraduate studies: he ranked third in the 1st Professional Examination, first in the 2nd Professional Examination, and second in the Final Professional Examination. Before achieving his Masters Degree in Neuroscience (M.S.c), Dr. Sharma became a Senior House Officer and subsequently Registrar in Psychiatry in the North London Training Scheme based at Claybury Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, University College Hospital, and Middlesex Hospital from June 1988 to April 1992. Dr. Sharma

Dr. Sharma has been involved in schizophrenia research since 1988, when he began his psychiatric training. From 1988 until 1995, Dr. Sharma led diverse research projects comprising 12 scholars under the supervision of his mentor, Professor Robin Murray. The studies used numerous neurobiological markers (extensive clinical data, neurology, neuropsychology, evoked potentials, MRI) to characterize the endophenotype in schizophrenia, as well as to validate the familial non-familial technique for doing schizophrenia research. This endeavor necessitated rigorous negotiations and planning, and the study has resulted in a slew of publications. The MRI arm of the study was later financed by the Medical Research Council.

Dr. Sharma began conducting independent research in 1995, focused on schizophrenia cognition and imaging. Recent research has looked into cognition and emotion in the context of depression, mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer’s disease. During this time, he was able to oversee a 25-person research team through different grants he was awarded.

In addition to his accomplishments as a scholar, Dr. Sharma was involved in a variety of volunteer activities. He was in charge of monthly training sessions for the volunteers that answered the phones at SANELINE. He also assisted in updating their psychiatry database, while being available for any queries that require medical input. Dr. Sharma also volunteered as an on-call Psychiatrist for the National Schizophrenia Fellowship’s inner London Ethnic Minority cell, which conducted an emergency assessment of people from the Indian subcontinent,

including Bengalis, Urdu, Punjabis, Gujratis, and Sikhs. He also worked with several divisions of the National Schizophrenia Fellowship across the country to raise awareness about schizophrenia.Dr. Sharma

Dr. Tonmoy Sharma has spent years promoting measurement-based care, evidence-based treatments, and recovery management in addiction and mental health treatment across the United States at professional meetings, conferences, and congregations. His dedication to offering high-quality, evidence-based treatment programs led him to actively train clinicians and practitioners in a variety of settings.

As of today, Dr. Sharma is an internationally renowned research psychiatrist, who has been a peer reviewer for 15 international medical journals, served on various editorial boards, participated on several antipsychotic medication advisory groups, directed over 20 national and international clinical investigations, wrote over 200 peer-reviewed journal publications, and co-authored five books on Schizophrenia.

Dr. Sharma intends to use his knowledge in neuroscience research to develop approaches in his company, Sovereign Health. He ensures that patients are viewed holistically, and Sovereign’s cognitive enhancement programs incorporate neuroscience, developmental psychology, and software infrastructure applications to promote brain fitness and health.
